Upper Wharfedale is a beautiful limestone area designated an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Along with the neighbouring villages of Yockenthwaite and Starbotton, Buckden originates from clearings made in the forests by the Viking settlers.

After the Norman Conquest, these villages grew with Buckden evolving as a forest village within the hunting forests of the monastic estates of nearby Fountains Abbey.

From 1653, lead mining developed at Buckden and Starbotton but by the 1830's most of the mines had closed due to a drop in demand. Buckden lead mine can be visited by climbing the hill to Buckden Pike.

Today, the village provides an ideal centre for exploring the Yorkshire Dales by car or on foot. And after a hard day enjoying yourself, treat yourself to a well earned drink or excellent meal at the White Lion at Cray, a mile up the road.
